Tweetminster (UK)

"On May 6th millions of people across the country will head to the polling booths to cast their vote. Tens of thousands of them use Twitter. Tweetminster, Channel 4, The Guardian and the New Statesman are teaming up to map the day's action and we need your help. On May 6, when you head out to vote, tweet #ukvote alongside the first half of your post code (for example #ukvote SE1) and we will plot votes in real time on a map. We're not asking you to include who you're voting for - that's a secret you don't need to share. The map and data will be made available online and anyone will be able to easily add it to their site. We will also showcase a regional breakdown of turnout. The goal of the experiment is to inspire more people to vote and to help get a sense of turnout (on Twitter at least) during the course of the day and across the country. The experiment is inspired by a similar initiative around the hashtag #uksnow"

TweetUp makes Twitter more relevant for everyone. It's the fastest and easiest way for you to find the best tweets and tweeters in the world, and for serious tweeters to grow a highly targeted following. One of the biggest complaints about Twitter is that 80% of tweets are pure noise, while valuable tweets fly by in an instant never to be seen again. All of which makes finding useful information from the most important tweeters almost impossible. And for serious tweeters, there is the daunting task of attracting interested and relevant followers. TweetUp aims to change all of that. TweetUp boosts the world's best tweeters on any topic to the top of search results, raising them above the noise and giving them persistence against the backdrop of millions of tweets that fly by each minute"

Twitter acquires Cloudhopper

Fromm the Twitter bog: "Twitter was inspired by SMS and we continue to embrace this simple but ubiquitous technology. In fact, Twitter's 140 character limit was designed specifically to allow for any tweet to be read in its entirety whether you're using a rudimentary mobile phone, or a more sophisticated Internet enabled device. Over the last eight months we have been working with a startup called Cloudhopper to become one of the highest volume SMS programs in the world - Twitter processes close to a billion SMS tweets per month and that number is growing around the world from Indonesia to Australia, the UK, the US, and beyond. To help us further grow and scale our SMS service, we are happy to announce the acquisition of Cloudhopper, a messaging infrastructure company that enables Twitter to connect directly to mobile carrier networks in countries all over the planet"

Twitter predicts Labour victory (UK)

Political #Twitter group Tweetminister is predicting a small Labour majority or a hung parliament after analysing millions of messages on Twitter. The results chime with those of traditional pollsters who are also predicting a very close General Election race, but it is one of the few polls to predict that Gordon Brown might emerge victorious. The political micro-bloggers will continue to analyse Twitter as the election progresses to see if word-of-mouth mentions of the candidates can help to predict who will be the winners and losers on polling day. So far it has already analysed 2 million tweets for the study, taking its inspiration from a project in Japan's 2009 General Election which looked into the correlation between "online buzz" and election results
