Queen Elizabeth II and the British Royal family have joined social networking website #Twitter. The page of the royal family on the site will be run to provide news and information service, with lists of engagements and updates to websites reporting about the royalty. However, the family members will not tweet on the page. "The Queen has been advised that it's up and running but there won't be any members of the Royal Family tweeting," the Telegraph quoted a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace as saying. Already more than 6,400 people have started following the monarchy at http://twitter.com/britishmonarchy. Teams at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House are maintaining the page. #Twitter has gained academic respectability with inclusion in the Collins English Dictionary. The social networking tool, which has 1.8 million users, will be listed in the 30th anniversary edition to be published later this year. The website, which allows users to send brief online updates to their friends and family, will appears as both a noun and a verb. The entry under noun will read: "a website where people can post short messages about their current activities" and under verb it will read: "to write short messages on the Twitter website". The word Twitterati, referring to users of the website, will also be entered, as will Twitterverse, which defines the website and its users. Elaine Higgleton, Collins editorial director, told the Daily Mail: "Hardly a day goes by when you don't see some Twitter-related article. Hence I find it entirely unsurprising that this year we have not one Twitter-related entry in the dictionary, but three." Barack Obama, Britney Spears, Stephen Fry and Lily Allen are all regular users of the website. During Wimbledon Andy Murray posted updates, including one which revealed the Queen had wished him luck.
